NNOC President Dr. Ndeulipula Hamutumwa emphasised the significance of Coventry’s leadership, particularly for Africa and smaller nations like Namibia.
“Kirsty Coventry’s election marks a defining moment for global sports. With her deep understanding of athlete needs and sports governance, she is well-positioned to drive progress, inclusivity, and growth within the Olympic Movement,” said Dr. Hamutumwa.
Her appointment is seen as a breakthrough for Africa, ensuring the continent’s sporting challenges and opportunities are well represented on the global stage. Dr. Hamutumwa expressed optimism about increased investment in sports development across Africa under Coventry’s leadership.
“This is a proud moment for Africa. Her victory signals that African leaders are prepared to shape the future of sport at the highest level,” he added.
For smaller nations like Namibia, Coventry’s presidency brings hope for enhanced support in athlete development.
“Resource limitations often hinder smaller nations, but with a leader who has championed athlete-centered policies, we are hopeful that Olympic Solidarity programs will continue to strengthen, providing opportunities for all nations to thrive,” Dr. Hamutumwa noted.
Acknowledging the historic nature of Coventry’s election as the first female IOC President, Dr. Hamutumwa drew parallels with Namibia’s own milestone in having its first female Head of State:
“Her achievement underscores the growing representation of women in leadership, inspiring young girls across Africa to pursue their dreams and break barriers.”
The NNOC looks forward to collaborating with President Coventry and the IOC to further advance sports development, athlete welfare, and the Olympic values in Namibia and beyond.
